Future Leaders – How to spot them?
You’re grooming future leaders in your organization. How do you pick them?
Far too often, managers promote the person who is good at their job but don’t take it a step further to see how they treat others. Or they don’t provide them with any leadership development training on how to lead a team.
When I am looking to promote the next leader, I’m looking for those who:
Get along well with others!
Teachable, trainable, and eager to learn more
Has respect for others
Don’t shy away from extra projects
Look for solutions to problems
Balancing project deadlines with team experience levels: Can you effectively lead your team to success?
The manager needs to know their strengths and weaknesses, and their team’s strengths and weaknesses. Communicate often! Make sure the team knows what the deadline date is. Always give yourself padding for a few days or even a week. If your true deadline is Friday, August 23, THEN you give your team a deadline of Wednesday, August 21. Understand the specific tasks and then strategically put each person on said task according to their strengths. Check in often to get the necessary updates, regroup, refocus, add more resources as necessary, and keep everyone updated on how the project is going overall.
